Olfactory thresholds in unilaterally bulbectomized rats

Burton M. Slotnick and Frances W. Schoonover

Department of Psychology, The American University Washington, DC 20016, USA

Five normal and five unilaterally bulbectomized rats were tested for their intensity difference threshold, absolute threshold and ability to acquire a two-odor discrimination. There were no significant differences between groups for mean threshold values or the rate at which the detection and discrimination tasks were acquired. These results do not support the notion proposed in earlier studiesthat central summation of birhinically inhaled odors increases sensitivity to threshold levels of odorants.
